Rishworth Moor

Type: Four Boots
Route Length: 5-8 miles
 
This circular walk starting at Ryburn reservoir takes in the high Pennine moors above the Ryburn Valley giving wide views across the moors. The walk can be exposed to the weather during winter months so please dress appropriately and wear footwear suitable for moorland walking.

The start of the walk is from the car park at Ryburn reservoir, at the end of Swift Place off the A58, Rochdale Road at the north east corner of the reservoir.

Route

Leave the car park at Point 1 and walk over the embankment. turning right and then after 25 yards left up the woodland footpath to the field.  Cross the stile and follow the flagged path through the field to Cheetham Laithe Farm, Point 2.

Pass through Cheetham Laithe Farm and the farm entrance gate posts and turn right on a surfaced track.  Keep on the lane through Upper Cockroft Farm onto the public highway.  Take care when turning right and left, crossing the road and walking up Long Gate, signed Pike End.  Ascend up the road to Pike Law House, Point 3.  Go through the pedestrian gate with the house on the right.

Go straight up the steps onto a grass footpath into the field and moor.  Bare right keeping the boundary wall on your right, please do not cross the boundary.  With New Laithe Farm buildings across the fields to your right, leave the boundary wall heading left and above the old quarry workings looking for the stile that crosses the wall.  Head towards the stile, Point 4.

Cross the wall using the stile and fallow the depression which marks the line of Blackwood Edge Road.  The line of the path is marked by posts and cairns.  At the catchwater, Point 5, cross the water course using the bridge and turn right.  Walk on to the bridge at Point 6.  Here signed Blackstone Edge and Baitings reservoir continue across the catchwater following the footpath uphill to a drainage ditch turning left.  Keeping the ditch on your right walk around the hill to the Rishworth Drain, a concrete structure, Point 7.

Turn right sign posted Baitings reservoir.  Keep the drainage ditch on your right and follow the path marked by posts and cairns, until you reach the corner of the wall, Point 8.  Follow the wall down a grass lane to the public highway.  At the road turn left and right into a farm track signed Beeston Hall and Ryburn reservoir.  Pass by with Higher Wormald Farm, Point 9, on your right, continuing on the green lane into the field and walk towards the tree.  Turn left at the derelict farm, descending through the field to the woodland and to the river bridge.  Cross the bridge, turn right signed Yorkshire Water Premissive Path, keeping the reservoir on your right return to the car park at Ryburn reservoir.
