There are a series of paths at Ramsden that provide walks in the valley and over moors near Holmfirth, the backdrop to Yorkshire’s longest-running TV series Last of The Summer Wine. The route includes a mixture of moorland and unsurfaced paths presenting beautiful views across the valley and up onto the higher moors where the Holme Moss transmitter mast is a prominent feature. The walk is approximately 2.5 miles long.

Route 1. From the temporary car park head down towards the car park entrance and turn left when you get to the road. Follow road until you come to a gated track on your right hand side. Turn right down this track and through gap next to gate following the public footpath which takes you over the dam wall. 2. At the end of the dam wall turn right and follow the path up the hillside. Continue to the top where the path curves left close to a fence and then descends to the next stream, over a bridge and up the wooded path beyond. Higher up, the path enters more open land with a wall on the left. Where that wall ends, go through into the next field and turn half-left uphill to a gap stile in the wall then immediately over a step stile into a path up the field side. Shortly the path crosses to the other side of the left-hand wall and continues up to another stile alongside the field gate. 3. Turn left into Holme and follow the main road. 4. A few yards after the phone box, turn left into an opening between buildings and descend to a walk-through stile alongside a gate. Continue down the grass path to another small gate. The path is alongside the right-hand wall and then descends to a gateway ahead. Go through that and continue to Gill Hey Bridge. Go up the old steps, over a stile at the top and continue up the moor with an old wall on the right. At the end of the first enclosure at the pair of stone gateposts continue for 20 yards then cross through the old wall. 5. Stay with the ruined wall as it progresses down the moor and crosses, then re-crosses a small stream. Pass an orange-topped marker and, where the hillside ahead descends steeply, bear left to the junction of Paths. At the junction of the paths bear left and follow the route along the reservoir shore and then along an open path slanting up the hillside back to checkpoint 2. At checkpoint 2 turn right over dam wall and retrace your steps back to the car park. OS Map: Explorer OL1
