More Hall - long walk

Type: Two Boots
Route Length: 2-5 miles

This route is ideal for walkers looking for a bit of variety whilst getting away from life’s daily grind. There are two walks of different lengths, one running around the edge of More Hall Reservoir in the Ewden Valley, the other following the same path but extending the walk into woodland and the lanes of the valley to the south. The woodland path can become muddy when wet so boots are recommended. The walk is 3.4 miles long.

Location
South of Stockbridge

Access
Park at the western end of the private road which runs along the north side of More Hall, near Ewden Village, point 1.

Route

From the parking area point 1 walk along the road to the junction at Ewden village and take the left- hand fork to the bridge.  After the bridge, continue on the road for a short distance until you reach another fork.  Walk on the bridleway past the southern end of Broomhead Reservoir Embankment at point 2.  In approximately 50 metres turn left at the steps onto a new path through the wood.  Please note that this path can become muddy when wet.

Keep to the marked path, which is initially a fairly steep climb, and 20 metres before the top boundary wall turn left along the hillside.  Pass through the wide gap in an old stone wall to a T-junction with a track.  Turn right to a gap stile alongside the gate and onto the road at point 3.

Turn left along the road for about 32m (walking on verges where possible) to be the first farm on the left.  Turn left just past the farm entrance over a stone step stile into a grassed field.  Follow the left-hand boundary of the field across and down the field to its lowest corner (look for a gate).  Use the stile to the right of the gate and turn left down a well surfaced sunken lane.

Follow the lane past a farm on the left and continue down the lane to its junction with Jack Lane.  Turn left at the junction and continue down the hill to a signed path on the right in about 100m.  Turn right on to the footpath for about 120m and then turn left at a marker post at point 4 between the conifers to the waterside path close to the edge of the reservoir.

Turn right and follow the waterside path for half a mile and, as you approach a small group of buildings, bear slightly right along the track on the edge of the wood passing above the buildings and continue to the end of the dam wall at point 5. Turn left over the dam to the road and turning left walk along the private road for almost 1 mile back to the start at point 1.
